Taiwan’s defense ministry announced on Saturday that it is on high alert following a series of missile tests conducted by China’s Rocket Force in Inner Mongolia. These tests, detected in the early hours, have led Taiwan’s air defense forces to remain vigilant. The tests occurred approximately 1,200 miles from Taiwan, adding to the ongoing military tensions between the island and China.
China’s Rocket Force, which oversees the country’s missile arsenal, carried out these tests amidst increased military pressure on Taiwan. Since the inauguration of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te in May, Beijing has intensified its military activities, rejecting Lai’s offers for dialogue and labeling him a “separatist.” The Chinese defense ministry has not commented on the recent missile tests.
Taiwan’s advanced radar systems, located on its central mountain range, provide extensive surveillance capabilities, enabling the monitoring of activities within China. These systems are crucial as Taiwan faces frequent military maneuvers from China, which views the island as its own. In August 2022, China launched missiles into the waters around Taiwan during military drills, protesting a visit by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The missile tests underscore the volatile nature of cross-strait relations. Taiwan’s defense ministry continues to monitor the situation closely, with air defense forces prepared to respond to any threats. President Lai has repeatedly stated that Taiwan’s future should be determined by its people, rejecting Beijing’s sovereignty claims.
The recent tests highlight the ongoing geopolitical challenges Taiwan faces. Despite the increasing military pressure, Taiwan remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining its security and sovereignty. As both sides continue to monitor each other’s actions, the situation remains tense, with the potential for further developments in the near future.
