Merrick Garland Echoes The Left’s Disregard For Election Integrity

In a move demonstrating the left’s disregard for the law, Attorney General Merrick Garland recently described efforts to secure the voting system as “burdensome and unnecessary.”

Garland’s remarks came during a speech at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Selma, Alabama, during the 59th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” — the day when police officers attacked civil rights demonstrators in Selma.

In his speech, the attorney general accused federal courts of weakening the 1965 Voting Rights Act by allowing common sense measures, such as requiring identification before voting.

“Since those decisions, there has been a dramatic increase in legislative measures that make it harder for millions of eligible voters to vote and to elect the representatives of their choice … such measures threaten the foundation of our system of government,” Garland said.

“Some have even suggested giving state legislatures the power to set aside the choice of the voters themselves,” he added. “That is not the way a representative democracy is supposed to work … The right to vote is still under attack.”

Garland continued by pointing out the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) efforts to prevent states from implementing “unnecessary” measures to safeguard elections.

The attorney general said that under his watch, the department would be “challenging efforts by states and jurisdictions to implement discriminatory, burdensome and unnecessary restrictions on access to the ballot, including those related to mail-in voting, the use of drop boxes and voter ID requirements,” among other limitations.

Amid claims of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, Republicans across the country have taken steps to secure elections by enacting measures that make it harder for Democrats to commit fraud or modify the system to their advantage. These efforts have been strongly opposed by the Biden administration.

Like Garland, President Joe Biden has blasted efforts to safeguard America’s election system.

In 2021, the president said, “We’re facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War. That’s not hyperbole, since the Civil War.”

Garland’s comments over election integrity demonstrate the left’s disregard in ensuring that American elections are conducted fairly and transparently.
