President Donald Trump is increasing economic pressure on Russia, warning that he is prepared to impose additional banking sanctions and tariffs unless Moscow agrees to a cease-fire with Ukraine. His latest statement signals an aggressive push to bring both nations to the negotiating table as the war continues to escalate.
On Friday, Trump took to Truth Social to issue his warning. “Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED,” he wrote.
This warning follows a contentious meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week. The discussion reportedly ended with Zelensky being asked to leave the White House after a disagreement over U.S. support for Ukraine.

In addition to economic threats, Trump’s administration is moving forward with diplomatic efforts. His team is set to meet with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia next week to explore potential cease-fire agreements. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that negotiations are in progress to de-escalate the war.
Trump’s approach differs from past U.S. strategies, focusing on economic leverage rather than continued military aid. If implemented, his proposed sanctions could mirror past restrictions on Iran, which targeted foreign companies doing business with the regime, significantly isolating its economy.
With concerns growing over the possibility of the war expanding beyond Ukraine, Trump’s message is clear — Russia and Ukraine must negotiate, or Moscow will face severe economic consequences.
