Trump Ends NYC’s Toll Scheme, Hochul Furious Over Lost Billions

President Donald Trump has put a stop to New York City’s congestion pricing plan, eliminating a toll that would have forced commuters to pay $9 just to enter Manhattan’s Central Business District. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who pushed for the plan, immediately promised legal action to restore the fee.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the decision in a letter to Hochul, calling the toll unfair to working-class residents and small business owners. Duffy argued that drivers had already paid for roads through gas taxes and other fees and should not be forced to pay extra just to use them.

The toll plan, which had been in place since January, faced backlash from those who rely on their vehicles for work. Business owners who travel between New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut were among the hardest hit. Critics said the program made it even more expensive to live and work in the city.

Trump celebrated the decision with a post on Truth Social declaring, “CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD… LONG LIVE THE KING!” His message immediately drew outrage from Hochul, who responded, “We are a nation of laws, not ruled by a king.” She later announced that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority had filed a lawsuit to fight the decision.

Hochul’s administration claims the toll revenue was essential for funding public transit, but many New Yorkers saw it as another tax on workers and businesses. The Trump administration pointed out that federal law typically does not allow tolls on highways funded by taxpayer dollars, but former President Joe Biden had made an exception for Hochul’s plan.

With the congestion pricing program now in legal limbo, New Yorkers will not be paying the extra fees — at least for now.
