Senate Republicans Block Biden’s Controversial Nominee Adeel Mangi

Adeel Mangi, President Biden’s nominee to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, was blocked this week after bipartisan opposition over his radical political ties. Mangi, whose associations with anti-police groups and support for controversial political views raised alarms, will no longer be considered for the lifetime judicial position.

Mangi’s nomination had been met with significant resistance due to his connections with the Rutgers Center for Security, Race, and Rights, an organization that has been criticized for its radical views on law enforcement. Additionally, Mangi’s role with the Alliance of Families for Justice, a group that had referred to infamous cop killers as “freedom fighters,” fueled further concerns. These affiliations ultimately led to his nomination’s defeat.

In exchange for withdrawing Mangi and three other controversial nominees, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer reached an agreement with Republicans to confirm more than a dozen district court nominees. While Schumer framed this as a win, it gives President-elect Donald Trump the opportunity to fill these important appellate court vacancies once he takes office, making it a significant setback for Biden’s judicial agenda.

Mangi’s defeat is a win for Senate Republicans, who have consistently fought against Biden’s radical judicial appointments. The Republican Party has made it clear that it will not stand by while the courts are packed with judges who hold extreme political views.

The defeat of Mangi marks an important victory in the ongoing battle to preserve the integrity of the judiciary.
