Saudi Arabia To Lead Regional Cloud Seeding Efforts Amid Controversy

In an effort to address worsening water shortages, Saudi Arabia is expanding its cloud-seeding program, a process designed to increase rainfall by modifying weather patterns. The move comes as part of a broader effort to combat desertification and secure water resources for the kingdom’s growing population. Osama Ibrahim Faqeeha, deputy environment minister, discussed the expansion during the UN General Assembly.

Saudi Arabia has been experimenting with cloud seeding since the early 2000s, though initial efforts were unsuccessful. Recent advancements in technology, particularly in artificial intelligence and meteorology, have improved the program’s chances of success. Researchers now have a clearer understanding of how cloud seeding works, making the process more targeted and effective.

Cloud seeding involves injecting chemicals into clouds to lower their temperature and trigger rainfall. The technique, though increasingly used worldwide, remains controversial. Environmentalists warn that altering natural weather patterns could have unintended consequences on ecosystems and global climates. However, Faqeeha stressed the importance of exploring every option, noting that Saudi Arabia is an extremely arid country that needs to boost its water supply.

In addition to cloud seeding, Saudi Arabia is hosting the COP16 summit on desertification this December. The kingdom plans to lead discussions on how to combat land degradation and explore innovative methods to preserve natural resources. While cloud seeding remains contentious, Saudi Arabia views it as a critical tool in its battle against desertification and water scarcity.

By positioning itself as a leader in weather modification, Saudi Arabia aims to spearhead regional research on cloud seeding. The program has the potential to change how Middle Eastern countries address their own climate challenges.
