Salt Lake City Churchgoers Attacked By Man With Bamboo Sword During Sunday Mass

In a shocking incident that has left the local Catholic community reeling, a man identified as Chandler Grillone, 31, has been arrested for allegedly ambushing parishioners with a wooden sword during Sunday mass at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City, Utah. The unprovoked attack has resulted in Grillone facing aggravated assault charges and other offenses.

According to authorities, Grillone entered the church during mass, armed with a bamboo sword, and randomly attacked multiple people without any apparent motive or provocation.

Witnesses reported that he struck two individuals with the sword and punched a third, causing the victim’s glasses to break. The sudden and violent nature of the attack has left parishioners struggling to comprehend the reason behind the assault.

When officers arrived at the scene and attempted to arrest Grillone, he reportedly resisted, forcing the police to resort to using a “WRAP” device, a full-body restraint designed to subdue suspects while minimizing the risk of injury to both the individual being arrested and the arresting officers. The use of this device highlights the severity of the situation and the challenges faced by law enforcement in handling violent and uncooperative suspects.

The Cathedral of the Madeleine, a well-known church in the heart of Salt Lake City, has not yet issued a public statement about the incident. The church community is grappling with the aftermath of the attack, as parishioners attempt to come to terms with the violence that unfolded during a sacred time of worship.

As the investigation into the incident continues, Grillone remains in jail without bail. The case has reignited discussions about the importance of implementing and maintaining adequate security measures in places of worship, as well as the need for community members to remain alert and prepared to respond to potential threats.
