In a recent interview, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that U.S.-Russia relations are dangerously close to “direct military conflict” due to President Joe Biden’s actions. Speaking with Turkey’s Hurriyet Daily, Lavrov expressed concern over what he called Biden’s “Russophobia” and suggested that current U.S. policies are escalating tensions to an unprecedented level.
Lavrov told the Hurriyet Daily that Biden’s approach has led to a significant deterioration in relations, saying, “Under the current president… our countries are on the brink of direct military conflict,” as reported by the Business Recorder. His remarks reflect Moscow’s growing anxiety over what it views as Biden’s aggressive stance.
Lavrov also clarified that Russia has no preference in the upcoming U.S. presidential election. He recalled that, during Trump’s administration, the United States imposed more sanctions on Russia than any previous administration, signaling Moscow’s doubts that the election outcome will alter the situation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also weighed in, humorously calling Biden his “favorite” candidate in past remarks. Referring to Biden’s endorsement of Kamala Harris, Putin sarcastically pledged his “support” for her, describing her laugh as “expressive,” a thinly veiled mockery.
The statements from Lavrov and Putin suggest that Russia views U.S. policy under Biden as increasingly hostile, and Lavrov’s warning brings a spotlight to the severity of the current U.S.-Russia relationship as Election Day nears.
