Republicans Push To Overturn FACE Act Used Against Pro-Life Protesters

House Republicans, led by Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, have introduced a bill to repeal the FACE Act, claiming it has been weaponized by the Biden administration to unfairly prosecute pro-life advocates. The legislation has gained support from 25 Republican lawmakers.

Roy pointed to data showing that since 1994, nearly all prosecutions under the FACE Act targeted pro-lifers, with 97% of cases directed at those opposing abortion. Meanwhile, attacks on pregnancy centers and churches have gone largely unpunished.

The FACE Act was originally intended to prevent interference with abortion clinics, but Republicans argue that it has been selectively enforced. Roy stated that repealing the law is critical now that Republicans hold a majority in Congress and control the White House.

Sen. Mike Lee of Utah is set to introduce a corresponding measure in the Senate, continuing his years-long opposition to the law. Lee has argued that the FACE Act goes beyond Congress’s authority and infringes on the rights of pro-life Americans.

Pro-life organizations, including CatholicVote and Concerned Women for America, have backed the repeal effort, stating the FACE Act has been used to silence peaceful protests while ignoring violence against pro-life facilities. They are calling on lawmakers to act swiftly to repeal the law.

President Donald Trump has also been urged by conservative groups to pardon individuals convicted under the FACE Act, arguing that they were unjustly targeted during the Biden administration’s tenure.
