Sen. Rand Paul is calling for an investigation into the US gold reserves at Fort Knox, enlisting Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to determine whether the reported $425 billion in gold is still there. His push for an audit follows years of speculation that the nation’s gold supply may not be as secure as officials claim.
The call for an inspection began after Musk responded to an X post questioning the lack of routine audits at Fort Knox. When asked why the gold reserves were not reviewed annually, Musk expressed surprise, prompting Paul to reply, “Nope. Let’s do it.”
What would @DOGE find if they audited Fort Knox?
It has been rumored for 50+ years that all Fort Knox holds is cobwebs and deception. pic.twitter.com/r8tRLyJvYX— Ludwig The Guy (@LudwigTheGuy1) February 16, 2025

Fort Knox, located in Kentucky, is said to hold 4,580 tons of gold, but access to the facility has been tightly restricted for decades. The last major public viewing of the vaults occurred in 1974 when journalists and lawmakers were allowed inside to counter growing skepticism over the reserves’ existence. In 2017, then-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin toured the facility, but his visit produced few details beyond a handful of photos.
Even the head of DOGE did not know about Fort Knox. Us 'Gold Bugs' have been on it for years and I think the payoff will be coming soon. pic.twitter.com/IcBKya8suA

Paul’s interest in auditing Fort Knox echoes efforts by his father, former Rep. Ron Paul, who pushed for similar transparency measures in 2010. Those attempts failed, but with Musk now leading DOGE and aggressively cutting wasteful government spending, there may be renewed momentum to review the gold reserves.
DOGE has already conducted major audits within federal agencies, uncovering billions in mismanaged funds. If Musk and his team gain access to Fort Knox, they could provide a definitive answer to a question that has persisted for decades.
After seeing Mitch McConnell inside of Fort Knox, I want an audit. Is the gold still there?

Dear @DOGE
Find out if there’s gold in Fort Knox please!
On September 23, 1974, a rare and highly publicized event unfolded at the Fort Knox Bullion Depository when a group of reporters and a handful of congressmen were granted access to view the nation’s gold reserves. This… pic.twitter.com/XqftWiUvSe

While no official audit has been scheduled, public pressure is growing. Whether Musk and DOGE will be allowed inside Fort Knox remains to be seen.
DOGE and @elonmusk could find almost $1T by doing one thing:
Audit Fort Knox and mark the gold reserves to market at ~$3000.
The gold currently sits on the Government balance sheet at a pre-1971 price of $42. The US is the only major power that hasn’t marked its gold to market. pic.twitter.com/IYcG2djWfZ
