Prominent progressive Democrats, including Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), have taken the side of President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign, even as some Democrats urge him to step aside. This endorsement comes after a week of Biden facing criticism over his mental acuity and electability following a less-than-stellar debate performance.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez confirmed her support for Biden, stating, “I have spoken to the president over the weekend. I have spoken with him extensively. He made clear then and he has made clear since that he is in this race. The matter is closed.”
Similarly, Rep. Omar has integrated Biden into one of her campaign ads, signaling her endorsement. Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) has also voiced her support, emphasizing the importance of focusing on defeating former President Donald Trump.
However, not all members of the “Squad” have publicly declared their stance. Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Cori Bush (D-MO), and Maxwell Frost (D-FL) have yet to comment on Biden’s candidacy, remaining critical of his handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, acknowledged the diverse opinions within the caucus. In a statement, she said, “It is true that Democrats are having many conversations among our members and our constituents as we consider the best path forward to protect our Democrats.”
Jayapal highlighted Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’s accomplishments but did not explicitly endorse Biden or call for him to step down. She indicated that Biden is expected to meet with members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus this week.
Ahead of the return of House members to Washington, D.C., Biden reiterated his commitment to the race in a letter to Democrats, stating, “The question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. It’s time for it to end. We have one job. And that is to beat Donald Trump.”
