Pelosi lauded Biden as “a Mount Rushmore kind of president,” emphasizing his significant contributions to the nation. “He was in a good place to make whatever decision – the top of his game,” she asserted.
CBS host Lesley Stahl appeared surprised by Pelosi’s suggestion, questioning the comparison. “Are you really saying that he belongs up there on Mount Rushmore? Lincoln and Joe Biden?” Stahl asked.
Pelosi defended her position, pointing to the existing figures on Mount Rushmore, including Teddy Roosevelt. “I don’t say take him down. But you can add Biden,” she argued.
The idea of placing Biden on Mount Rushmore has sparked intense debate, especially among those who criticize his presidency. Opponents argue that his policies have caused significant harm to the country, making such an honor seem unwarranted.
In the same interview, Pelosi also addressed rumors about her role in encouraging Biden to reconsider his 2024 candidacy. “No, I wasn’t the leader of any pressure [campaign],” she claimed. “I didn’t call one person. I could always say to him, ‘I never called anybody.’”
However, CNN reported last month that Pelosi privately advised Biden against running, citing poor poll numbers and the potential risk to the Democratic Party’s future. According to the report, she warned that staying in the race could endanger the party’s chances of retaining power.
When questioned by MSNBC about whether Biden should step down, Pelosi avoided a direct answer. “I want him to do whatever he decides to do, and that’s the way it is,” she said. “Whatever he decides, we go with.”
