NYPD Ordered Not To Destroy Files As Feds Investigate Alleged Nightclub Corruption

Federal agents have ordered the NYPD to preserve all electronic files related to an investigation into alleged influence peddling at New York City nightclubs involving Police Commissioner Edward Caban’s twin brother, James Caban. Sources say the probe focuses on James Caban’s alleged “nightlife consultancy company,” which promised club owners special treatment through his connections within the NYPD.

The federal letter, delivered to the NYPD’s legal bureau, prevents the department from destroying any hard drives or servers. Investigators believe crucial evidence of corruption could be stored on these devices. The investigation is being led by the Southern District of New York, which has also been probing campaign donations tied to Mayor Eric Adams’ 2021 election bid.

The probe has expanded to include several high-ranking NYPD officers, with federal agents seizing phones from commanders overseeing areas with a high concentration of clubs and restaurants. The IRS is also involved, suspecting financial transactions between Caban’s company and the nightclubs.

Earlier this week, federal agents raided the homes of Edward and James Caban, as well as other key figures in Mayor Adams’ administration. Despite the growing investigation, the NYPD has stated that it is fully cooperating with authorities.

The investigation has raised concerns within the department, with some officials fearing that the intense scrutiny could lead to mental health issues among those involved.
