New Mexico Man Shoots Step-Mother At Graduation Ceremony

Christian Bencomo, 21, has been charged with multiple offenses after allegedly shooting his stepmother Victoria Bencomo in the neck during a graduation ceremony at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Wednesday. The incident occurred as Victoria attempted to hug Christian after he received his diploma from the Southwest Secondary Learning Center.

According to the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), over 100 people were present at the time of the shooting. Attendee Jennifer Renfro described the chaotic scene, stating that many initially mistook the gunshot for a firecracker or balloon before realizing the gravity of the situation.

Christian Bencomo faces charges including unlawful carrying of a weapon and aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm to a family member. He is currently being held without bail at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center.

Victoria Bencomo was rushed to a hospital where she is expected to survive. Her sister Angel Chester expressed disbelief at the incident, likening it to a bad dream.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Victoria’s recovery as she faces a long road ahead with extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. As the sole provider for her children, the financial burden is expected to be significant.
