The shooting occurred during heavy morning traffic when two vehicles, one driven by 22-year-old Tyler Matthew Johns and the other by the victim’s stepfather, were involved in a traffic dispute. Following an exchange of words through rolled-down windows after one driver reportedly used the shoulder to pass, Johns allegedly fired a single shot into the family’s SUV. The 11-year-old boy, seated in the back, was struck. The victim’s stepfather subsequently rammed Johns’ vehicle, leading both cars to stop on the freeway.

Investigation and Charges
A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer who was coincidentally passing the scene intervened immediately as both drivers exited their vehicles. The officer arrested Johns at the scene and recovered the firearm.
Henderson Fire Department paramedics transported the wounded child to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Johns is currently facing charges of open murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.
