Men Arrested In Louisiana Trying To Fire Meth, Tobacco Into Federal Prison

Two men from Colorado were taken into custody after authorities uncovered their scheme to use a compressed-air cannon to launch drugs and tobacco over the walls of a Louisiana federal prison.

Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz, 18, and Angel Gonzales Gutierrez, 19, were arrested outside the Federal Correctional Complex in Pollock while attempting to send $112,000 in tobacco and $89,500 worth of methamphetamine into the prison yard. The Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office said the men were apprehended before they could fire the air cannon.

The device they were carrying, similar to those used at stadium events to shoot promotional items into crowds, can launch objects over 350 feet. Authorities say it would have been capable of clearing the prison’s security fence with ease.

Sheriff’s deputies had been tracking the operation before making the arrests. The suspects were caught holding the packages of contraband along with the cannon that would have been used to deliver them.

Munoz and Gutierrez are facing charges for attempting to introduce contraband into a penal institution and attempting to distribute methamphetamine. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Munoz, as he is in the country illegally and is expected to be taken into ICE custody after his release from jail.

Following the arrests, FCI Pollock has indefinitely suspended all visitations.
