Mel Gibson’s New TV Series To Celebrate Christian Heroes In Malta

In an exciting development, Mel Gibson is creating a limited series focused on the historic Siege of Malta, where Christian knights successfully defended the island against the Ottoman Empire. This narrative diverges from the typical Hollywood trend of portraying Christians negatively, instead showcasing them as heroes in a critical battle.

Gibson remarked, “I’m also working on a TV limited series about the Siege of Malta, which is an incredible story.” He noted the importance of filming on location, stating, “That’s where it happened, at these fortresses where 700 knights defended Malta.”

The siege occurred between May and September 1565 when the Ottomans sought to expand their empire into the Mediterranean. Facing an invading force of 40,000 Turkish soldiers, the 700 defenders put up a fierce resistance, resulting in a significant victory for the knights and a turning point in the conflict.

Historically, the battle resulted in heavy casualties, with approximately 3,000 Christians dying, while the Ottomans suffered around 20,000 losses. This defeat was a major setback for the Ottoman Empire and offered hope to Christian nations grappling with the threat of invasion.

The successful defense of Malta helped to delay Ottoman advances into Europe, with significant confrontations like the Siege of Vienna occurring later in 1683. Gibson’s project promises to highlight this remarkable story of bravery and sacrifice.

In addition to the Malta series, Gibson is also working on “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection,” which will depict the events surrounding Jesus’ resurrection. Filming for the sequel is slated to begin this spring after years of development.
