Marion Maréchal, a prominent French politician and Member of the European Parliament, blasted the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, describing it as an attack on Christian values. Maréchal, who watched the event with her family, referred to the ceremony as “crude woke propaganda.”
Maréchal highlighted several scenes she found offensive, including a depiction of Marie-Antoinette, the presence of drag queens and the Republican Guard dancing to Aya Nakamura’s music. She argued that these elements detracted from the event’s intended celebration of France’s cultural and sporting achievements.
Taking to social media, Maréchal addressed Christians worldwide who might have felt insulted by the ceremony. She emphasized that the views expressed in the event did not represent the broader French population but were instead the work of a “left-wing minority” intent on provocation.
Maréchal, known for her outspoken views on cultural and political issues, temporarily left French politics in 2017 after her aunt, Marine Le Pen, lost the presidential election. During this hiatus, she founded the Institute of Social, Economic, and Political Sciences (ISSEP) in Lyon. Maréchal has frequently spoken about the negative impacts of mass migration on France, a stance she reiterated during her 2018 speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the United States.
In 2022, Maréchal joined Éric Zemmour’s Reconquête Party, further distancing herself from her aunt’s National Rally. However, she was expelled from the party earlier this year after calling for her supporters to back the National Rally in snap legislative elections. Now an independent member of the European Parliament, Maréchal is part of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, led by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
While Maréchal’s future political plans remain uncertain, her recent critique of the Paris Olympics ceremony reflects her ongoing commitment to defending traditional values and challenging what she sees as left-wing provocations.
