A leftist social justice advocacy group has declared that opposing Joe Biden’s appointment of a White woman to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is racist. Free Press Action claims that critics of Gigi Sohn, 61, are guilty of sounding “anti-Black dog whistles” against her.
Biden nominated Gigi Sohn, 61, to become the fifth member of the FCC and act as the tie-breaking vote that could restore the federal government’s mission to implement “Net Neutrality,” a program that would essentially turn control of the internet in the U.S. to unelected Washington bureaucrats.

Free Press Action issued a fundraising letter on Thursday to benefit from the controversy surrounding Sohn’s nomination. It wrote: “Since Biden nominated public-interest champion Gigi Sohn to fill the fifth tie-breaking seat at the FCC, she has faced anti-Semitic, homophobic, and deceitful attacks, including anti-Black dog whistles from a police union.”
Sohn’s appointment has been stalled out in a Senate committee since October 2021. Biden has since renominated her for the same seat.
Even some Democrats in the Senate have opposed Sohn because of her unapologetic bias. She has previously called on the FCC to investigate conservative-leaning news outlets. She has referred to Fox News Network as “state-sponsored propaganda.”
The Fraternal Order of Police has taken a public position in opposition to Sohn’s appointment. That organization stated she has shown a “serious animus towards law enforcement officers and the rule of law.” Sohn has repeatedly called for the widespread defunding of police departments nationwide and has served with a group that seeks to prevent police from obtaining encrypted communications between criminal suspects.
Free Press Action referred explicitly to the Fraternal Order of Police as the group guilty of “anti-Black dog whistles often levied against public-interest advocates” in its attempt to raise money on the Sohn controversy.
Socialist professor Robert McChesney founded the leftist organization in 2022. He has heaped praise on former Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chávez. The group has received millions of dollars in funding from the Open Society Foundation, created and funded by billionaire globalist George Soros.
Free Press Action’s mission statement provides: “We believe that positive social change, racial justice and meaningful engagement in public life require equitable access to technology, diverse and independent ownership of media platforms.”
McChesney has demanded the “removal brick by brick of the capitalist system itself and rebuilding the entire society on socialist principles.”
