Justin Brannan Removed From Italian Caucus Over Dispute On Renaming Columbus Day

Brooklyn Councilman Justin Brannan has been ousted from the New York City Council’s Italian Caucus for his refusal to fully support Columbus Day. Brannan’s suggestion to rename the holiday to Italian-American Heritage Day sparked tension within the caucus, which is dedicated to defending Columbus Day.

The caucus, led by Councilman David Carr (R-Staten Island), revised its bylaws after Brannan’s comments in 2023, requiring members to oppose any renaming of the holiday. Carr stated that the caucus is committed to retaining the holiday as it is, with no room for compromise.

Brannan, who is running for city comptroller, defended his stance, stating that he remains proud of his Italian heritage but rejects what he called a “MAGA litmus test.” He argued that Columbus Day is a celebration of Italian-American contributions, not solely a tribute to Christopher Columbus.

The issue came to a head when Brannan was left out of the City Council’s Italian Heritage Celebration. Councilman Robert Holden (D-Queens) supported the caucus’ decision, accusing Brannan of embracing “woke” ideals and undermining Italian heritage.

The Italian Caucus remains united in its defense of Columbus Day as a significant part of Italian-American history and culture. Despite Brannan’s removal, the group continues to oppose any efforts to rename the holiday.
