The Biden-Harris administration’s focus on green energy is making America more dependent on China for critical resources, according to a report from the Heritage Foundation. The analysis argues that Democrats’ push to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy is putting the U.S. at a strategic disadvantage by relying on Chinese-controlled supply chains for key materials.
China’s dominance in the production of minerals and components needed for green technologies, such as wind turbines, solar panels, and electric vehicles (EVs), gives the country leverage over America’s energy security, the report warns. The authors, Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Miles Pollard, contend that competing with China’s state-subsidized industries through similar U.S. subsidies is not a viable strategy.
The report advocates for a policy shift that prioritizes domestic energy production and mineral extraction over green subsidies. It also suggests improving trade relations with resource-rich nations in Africa and South America while using tariffs to counter China’s unfair trade practices.
The analysis also points to the Biden-Harris administration’s decisions to block or slow domestic mining projects as counterproductive. The authors argue that streamlining the permitting process for new mines is essential to reducing America’s reliance on foreign resources and ensuring energy independence.
The report concludes that America’s current green energy strategy is sacrificing jobs, driving up energy costs, and making the country more vulnerable to economic pressure from China. The authors urge a return to policies that prioritize U.S. energy security and economic growth.
