Vice President Kamala Harris spread several misleading statements during her debate with President Donald Trump. Here are five major lies from the event.
1. Misrepresenting Trump’s Tax Reforms
Harris falsely claimed Trump’s 2017 tax cuts only benefited corporations and billionaires. However, the cuts significantly helped middle-income and working-class Americans, with the IRS showing substantial gains for these groups.
2. False Claim On Trump’s ‘Sales Tax’
Harris misleadingly asserted that Trump would implement a national sales tax if re-elected, but there is no evidence or proposal from Trump indicating such a plan. This claim appears to be baseless fearmongering.
3. Fabricating Trump’s National Abortion Ban
Harris falsely stated that Trump plans to sign a national abortion ban if re-elected. Trump has consistently said that decisions about abortion should be left to the states, and there is no record of him supporting a national ban.
4. Wrongly Accusing Trump Of Opposing IVF
Harris claimed Trump is against in vitro fertilization, a false accusation. Trump has expressed support for fertility treatments, making Harris’ claim entirely untrue and aimed at deceiving voters about his reproductive health policies.
5. Jan. 6 Hyperbole
Harris referred to the January 6 Capitol riot as the worst attack on American democracy since the Civil War. This exaggeration overlooks significant historical events, such as Pearl Harbor and 9/11, which had far greater impacts on the nation.
Throughout the debate, Trump not only had to contend with Harris’ false claims but also frequent challenges from the moderators, who appeared biased in their fact-checking. Trump essentially debated three opponents: Harris, David Muir, and Linsey Davis.
