GOP Demands Treasury Accountability After Chinese Cyber Breach

Republican lawmakers are pushing for immediate answers following a cyberattack on the Treasury Department linked to Chinese hackers. The attack, which targeted unclassified systems, was flagged in December by a third-party software provider.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and Rep. French Hill (R-AR) called the breach “extremely concerning” in a Dec. 31 letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. They demanded a briefing by Jan. 10 to explain how the breach occurred and what actions are being taken to prevent similar incidents.

The breach was traced to BeyondTrust, which alerted Treasury to a stolen key used to access its systems. Treasury has since deactivated the service and stated there is no evidence of ongoing access. The department is cooperating with the FBI and CISA to investigate the attack.

A Treasury spokesperson said the department takes all cyber threats seriously and highlighted efforts to bolster its defenses in recent years. However, lawmakers remain critical of Treasury’s response and overall cybersecurity readiness.

Scott and Hill questioned whether sufficient measures were in place to protect sensitive data, including tax information and financial activity reports. They expressed concern about the potential role of the Chinese Communist Party in exploiting U.S. vulnerabilities.

The breach has intensified scrutiny of Treasury’s cybersecurity protocols and the government’s broader efforts to counter state-sponsored cyber threats.
