A Florida law that mandates a state governor leave office should they become a nominee for United States president might be dropped so Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis is able to make a run for the White House in 2024.
“If an individual who is Florida governor is running for president, I think he should be allowed to do it,” Florida State Senate President Kathleen Passidomo (R-FL), told reporters Tuesday, per Politico. “I really do. That’s a big honor and a privilege, so it is a good idea.”
Passidomo and Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, (R-FL) both say it is a “good idea” for the law to be changed so DeSantis could make a run without giving up his position as governor, reported Politico.
DeSantis himself has made no indication that he would challenge former President Donald Trump in the Republican primary, according to Newsmax.
As the outlet pointed out, the law has been scrapped in the past. Florida’s rule was changed in 2008 to enable then-Gov. Charlie Crist to seek a nomination as vice president. The state’s legislature later reintroduced the law in 2012.
Newsmax claimed that DeSantis likely may wait until March 2023 before deciding whether or not he will make a run for the White House as it is when the Florida Legislature will reconsider the law, a non-election year.
Tensions between DeSantis and former President Trump seemed to have escalated as we approach the 2024 election.
The former president fired at DeSantis on his platform Truth Social:
“Ron DeSanctimonious is playing games! The Fake News asks him if he’s going to run if President Trump runs, and he says, “I’m only focused on the Governor’s race, I’m not looking into the future,” adding, “Well, in terms of loyalty and class, that’s really not the right answer.”
DeSantis faced questions from reporters about the struggles between the two in a recent press conference.
“All that’s just noise,” he said. “What really matters is, are you leading … are you delivering results … I would just tell people to go check out the scoreboard from last Tuesday night.”
