EU Targets Elon Musk’s X Platform Amid Concerns Over German Election Influence

The European Union is demanding Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, disclose internal details about its recommendation algorithm as part of an ongoing investigation into the company. This move comes as Germany prepares for a national election, with growing support for the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Regulators in Brussels have ordered X to submit documentation related to its content moderation practices and algorithmic systems by February 15. The investigation, conducted under the Digital Services Act (DSA), seeks to determine whether the platform has violated EU regulations regarding so-called disinformation and illegal content.

The pressure on X has increased following Musk’s public endorsement of the AfD, which has gained significant traction among German voters. A recent interview between Musk and AfD co-leader Alice Weidel attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers, raising concerns among EU officials about the platform’s influence on the election.

Henna Virkkunen, the EU’s digital commissioner, stated that compliance with the DSA is mandatory for platforms operating within Europe. She warned that failure to meet the commission’s demands could result in severe financial penalties or other regulatory actions.

Musk has been outspoken in his criticism of the EU’s efforts, arguing that X is being unfairly targeted for providing a platform that challenges mainstream narratives. He maintains that the company remains committed to free speech and transparency.

In addition to seeking information on X’s algorithm, EU authorities have issued a retention order requiring the company to preserve key documents through the end of the year.
