Senator-elect Dave McCormick is heading to Washington to participate in Senate orientation, despite efforts by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to block his attendance. Schumer claims the Pennsylvania Senate race is still undecided, even though McCormick was declared the winner days ago.
McCormick defeated Democratic incumbent Bob Casey by over 30,000 votes, according to results certified by the Associated Press on November 7. However, Schumer argues that more than 100,000 ballots remain uncounted and insists the race is unresolved. Casey has not conceded.
Republican leaders have decried Schumer’s actions as an assault on election integrity. “Schumer and Senate Democrats are denying the election results,” said Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY). “Blocking McCormick from attending orientation is an outrage.”
The National Republican Senatorial Committee also criticized Schumer’s refusal to recognize the results. “@AP declared @DaveMcCormickPA winner of #PASen 3 days ago,” said NRSC Chairman Steve Daines (R-MT). “Denying legit election results…is a disservice to PA & the country.”
McCormick’s decision to attend orientation highlights his confidence in the results and his readiness to serve. Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) stated, “Dave McCormick is the new senator for Pennsylvania. The idea that Schumer would not allow him to participate…is beyond unacceptable.”
As Republicans prepare to assume the Senate majority in January, the controversy underscores the growing partisan divide. McCormick’s attendance at orientation signifies a broader GOP effort to establish control despite resistance from Democratic leaders.
