Rep. James Comer (R-KY) has issued a subpoena to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas demanding documents related to Gov. Tim Walz’s (D-MN) alleged ties to China. This move is part of a broader investigation into claims that Walz may have connections with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) — a concern for Republicans as Walz is now the Democratic vice-presidential nominee.
The subpoena centers around a whistleblower’s claim that a DHS group chat, titled “NST NFT Bi-Weekly Sync,” holds crucial information regarding Walz’s relationship with China. Comer emphasized that the investigation began long before Walz was named Kamala Harris’ running mate, dismissing suggestions of political motivation.
Comer pointed to Walz’s history, including reports that he has visited China 30 times — even honeymooning there. GOP lawmakers are concerned these trips and his previous relationships with Chinese organizations may compromise his ability to confront Chinese aggression if elected.
The investigation also involves Walz’s promotion of the Hormel Institute, which partners with the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Comer requested FBI involvement to look into any potential connections between Walz’s actions and the CCP’s political influence in the US.
Mayorkas has been called to appear before the House Oversight Committee on October 7 to provide unredacted documents, including intelligence reports about Walz and his staff. This latest move in the investigation highlights growing GOP concerns about Chinese infiltration and its potential impact on US leadership.
