CNN anchor Poppy Harlow cornered New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) on Tuesday over her recent unconstitutional executive order declaring gun violence a “public health” crisis — which she used as a way to suspend the Second Amendment rights of residents of Albuquerque and the surrounding county.
Grisham has faced calls for her resignation in response to the executive order, as many have deemed it unconstitutional — with even members of her own party pointing out that there is no “public health” exception to the Constitution.
However, Harlow took a different approach when calling out the Democrat governor over the executive order — instead pressing her on how she would respond if a Republican governor used the same tactics to push through a ban on abortion.
“Are you overreaching?” the left-leaning CNN anchor asked before posing a “hypothetical” situation in which the roles are reversed.
“You’re a Democratic governor who’s doing this. What if a Republican governor of a state declares a health emergency and unilaterally outlaws abortion in that state, where the legislature has not done so by statute?” Harlow asked. “Following your logic, would that also be sound?”
“Ah — in this situation, honestly, I don’t think so, but that is what’s happening in this country,” Grisham claimed.

In the same interview, Grisham attempted to push back on those who pointed out the blatant unconstitutionality of her executive order — claiming: “It’s not for police to tell me what’s constitutional or not. They haven’t supported one, not one gun violence effort in the State of New Mexico including domestic violence protections, universal background checks.”
Despite that claim, the police have taken an oath to uphold the Constitution — just as Grisham has — and thus they must not enforce an unconstitutional order like the one Grisham illegally signed.
She also attempted to defend her order by claiming that it was a “suspension,” not an outright ban.
Meanwhile, the executive order was so egregious that even the staunchest anti-gun Democrats have spoken out against it — including March for Our Lives activist David Hogg and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA).
“I support gun safety but there is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution,” Hogg wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I support gun safety laws. However, this order from the Governor of New Mexico violates the U.S. Constitution. No state in the union can suspend the federal Constitution. There is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution,” Lieu posted.
