Christian Judo Champion Suspended For Making Sign Of The Cross At Olympics, Refuses To Apologize

Serbian judo world champion Nemanja Majdov has been suspended for five months after making the sign of the cross before a match at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The International Judo Federation (IJF) handed down the punishment, citing a violation of its code of ethics, which prohibits religious expressions on the field of play.

Majdov, a devout Christian, openly declared he would not apologize for his actions, stating, “The Lord has given me everything, both for me personally and for my career, and he is number 1 for me.” This is not the first time Majdov has faced warnings for his religious behavior during competitions, having received letters from the IJF in both 2018 and 2022.

The IJF explained that its rules are intended to preserve the sport’s ethics and ensure all competitors follow the same guidelines. Despite this, the governing body emphasized that it respects all cultures, religions, and orientations.

Majdov has had a distinguished career, winning the 2017 World Championship and five international gold medals. While suspended, Majdov vowed to return to the sport stronger, stating that his faith would guide him to future victories.
