Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government is preparing to step up border enforcement following discussions with President-elect Donald Trump. The meeting, held at Mar-a-Lago, focused on combating illegal immigration and drug trafficking, issues Trump has prioritized.
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc confirmed plans to bolster Canada’s border security by adding resources like drones, helicopters and personnel. LeBlanc stated that these efforts would be announced in the coming weeks.
Trump, who has criticized Canada and Mexico for weak border policies, reiterated his stance on Truth Social, threatening to impose a 25% tariff on goods unless action is taken. He emphasized that these tariffs would remain until illegal immigration and drug smuggling are curbed.
LeBlanc highlighted the constructive nature of the meeting, noting the respect between Trudeau and Trump. LeBlanc also met with Howard Lutnick, Trump’s Commerce Secretary nominee, to discuss trade and enforcement policies.
The Trudeau government’s upcoming measures aim to provide a strong response to US concerns while maintaining Canada’s interests. These efforts will mark a significant shift in how Canada handles border security.
Trump called the meeting “very productive,” underscoring the importance of collaboration in addressing these challenges.
