A competitive barbecue veteran marshaled hometown support to feed thousands of Hurricane Helene survivors this Thanksgiving in North Carolina’s mountain region.
David Burke activated networks in Margarettsville, coordinating nearly 200 volunteers preparing traditional holiday meals. The initiative targets communities still struggling two months after the devastating storm.
“Experience managing large cooking operations proves valuable,” Burke said, noting his background in barbecue competitions and fundraisers.
The Seaboard Lions Club stepped forward handling donations and supplies. “Proper oversight ensures resources reach intended recipients,” said club president Sarah Thompson.
Burke selected Newland as primary distribution site after learning about ongoing recovery challenges. “Rural areas often face gaps in government assistance,” he said.
Local organizations provided essential support coordinating volunteers and resources. “Small towns understand helping neighbors,” Burke said.
The operation showcases regional solidarity during crisis. “Carolina values include supporting fellow citizens,” Thompson said.
Organizers hope inspiring similar initiatives elsewhere. “Every community holds potential for meaningful impact,” Burke said.
