Ian Kersting, a 34-year-old assistant district attorney, was found dead Saturday night in Orleans Parish DA’s office. Authorities report that Kersting died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Emergency services responded to the scene at 619 South White Street around 9 p.m., but Kersting was pronounced dead on arrival. The DA’s office released a statement calling the incident a “terrible tragedy” and announced that grief counseling services would be offered to staff on Monday.

Kersting joined the office in 2020 and specialized in prosecuting cold-case sex crimes as part of the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI). Earlier this year, he played a leading role in two child sexual abuse cases that resulted in convictions.

The news of Kersting’s death came as New Orleans is still reeling from a deadly New Year’s Eve terrorist attack on Bourbon Street. Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the attacker, drove a truck through a crowd, killing 14 people and injuring dozens more. Federal authorities linked Jabbar to ISIS through evidence found in his vehicle.
