As EU Leaders Provoke Russia, Citizens Told To Prepare For Crisis

Rather than scale back military ambitions, European Union leaders are now telling their people to get ready for possible conflict. A new preparedness campaign calls on the 450 million residents of the bloc to stock up on essentials, signaling how far Europe has strayed from diplomacy.

EU Crisis Management Commissioner Hadja Lahbib urged citizens to gather enough food and water to last at least 72 hours. Other items on the list include radios, medicines and flashlights. The campaign is aimed at boosting readiness for disasters, but many see it as a reflection of the dangerous road Europe’s leaders have chosen.

Nations like France and Germany are moving ahead with their own emergency measures. France plans to send survival guides to households. Germany is reviewing options for turning buildings into nuclear bunkers. Sweden has revived civil defense plans for the first time in decades.

As the U.S. pushes for de-escalation, European politicians continue to ignore those warnings. President Emmanuel Macron is leading efforts to deepen involvement in Ukraine. The idea of sending European troops has alarmed Moscow, which has made clear that such a move would cross a line.

Poland has gone even further by announcing new military training requirements for men and considering a nuclear program of its own. Prime Minister Donald Tusk argued that disarmament left Ukraine exposed and that Poland shouldn’t make the same mistake. He has even suggested abandoning treaties that ban cluster munitions.

Germany is moving in the same direction. Friedrich Merz has proposed expanding nuclear cooperation with France and the U.K., hinting at a larger shift in German defense policy. The continent is preparing to pour hundreds of billions of euros into its armed forces through the ReArm Europe plan.

Lahbib also called for the EU to build a strategic reserve of emergency resources, including equipment to counter chemical or nuclear threats.
