Armed Man Confesses To Plot Against Trump Officials At Capitol

A Massachusetts man was taken into custody at the U.S. Capitol after voluntarily approaching law enforcement and revealing his plan to assassinate top members of the Trump administration. Ryan Michael English, 31, admitted to Capitol Police that he carried weapons and had specifically targeted Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, authorities said.

According to investigators, English turned himself in Monday afternoon while armed with a knife and two Molotov cocktails made from vodka bottles and hand sanitizer. Officers also recovered a lighter, and a subsequent search of his vehicle yielded additional incendiary materials.

Officials say English initially planned to attack Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and House Speaker Mike Johnson before shifting focus to Bessent after reading reports on the newly confirmed Treasury Secretary’s hearings. He reportedly left his phone at home to avoid detection and used a paper road atlas to navigate to Washington, D.C.

Court documents indicate English planned to use the Molotov cocktails to create chaos and, if possible, attack Bessent with a knife. He allegedly stated he was willing to engage law enforcement and anticipated a potential “suicide by cop” scenario.

Police discovered a handwritten note in English’s pocket addressed to a loved one, apologizing for his actions while blaming his target for what he saw as political oppression. Authorities say the suspect described his actions as a mission to remove “Nazis” from office.

English faces multiple federal charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying an incendiary device on government property, and making threats against public officials. Investigators continue to assess whether he had outside assistance or acted alone.
