A federal review of government spending has led to the recovery of $1.9 billion that was misplaced during the Biden administration. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, discovered the missing funds within the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), working with newly appointed HUD Secretary Scott Turner to track down and reallocate the money.
According to DOGE, the funds had been set aside for financial services but were never used. Due to inefficiencies in the process, the money had gone unaccounted for until DOGE’s team flagged the discrepancy. Turner worked with DOGE to release the funds, making them available for use by the U.S. Treasury.

Turner recently launched an internal HUD task force to scrutinize spending within the department. He emphasized the importance of ensuring every tax dollar is properly allocated and used as intended. “We will be very detailed and deliberate about every dollar spent in serving tribal, rural, and urban communities across America,” he stated.
The discovery comes as DOGE continues to uncover financial mismanagement in various federal agencies. Turner revealed that his department had already identified $260 million in additional savings prior to finding the misplaced funds. DOGE has also been involved in reviewing spending within the Environmental Protection Agency, where a $50 million Biden-era grant was canceled.
Musk, who has championed the mission of eliminating government waste, noted that even minimal oversight can lead to significant taxpayer savings. He shared details about the financial contracts connected to the misplaced HUD funds, highlighting the need for stricter budgetary controls.
